INTD 101  Freshman Seminar

Description
: This course is designed to help last year’s high school students to think like this year’s college students.  To do so, Freshman Seminar introduces them to the ideas of higher education in general and to the practices of Maryville University in particular, exploring the following questions: What does it mean to be a college student in the 21st Century?  What skills do students need?  What are student and instructor expectations?  How can students appreciate both unity and diversity?  And how can they demonstrate integrity and citizenship as members of their respective communities?  Students will read, write, participate in group activities, and use technology to foster their critical thinking skills.  There will be a shared Freshman Seminar reading as well as a research project.

Goals: To introduce students to these five concepts though discussion and application:

1.      Community—creating awareness of the different communities in which they hold membership (Maryville, St. Louis, and the world) and how to contribute to them

2.      Integration of Learning—exploring the purposes of higher education and the importance of integrating liberal and professional learning

3.      Collegiate Skill Development—developing the personal, professional, academic, and social skills to be successful at Maryville University and in one’s own life

4.      Citizenship—appreciating the issues at stake when living in a free and diverse society

5.      Integrity—discussing the importance of academic and personal honesty and responsibility in college and in life

All instances of plagiarism will be reported to the School dean, who forwards that information to appropriate University administrators.

NOTE ON WRITTEN WORK

Written work should be unified and coherent; it must use standard language, spelling, and punctuation. Use a word processing program for your assignments so you can revise and proofread them; then copy and paste into the appropriate D2L box.

Discussion entries should follow the individual directions for each of the 7 discussions, referring specifically to details of the material to be discussed, (film, book, financial presentation), using specific examples to support opinions, referring as appropriate to matters brought up by other discussion contributors.

All written assignments done outside class except for the My Freshman Experience project must be submitted on the D2L course site by the due date/time. The D2L system will not accept late work.
